The 2020 Michigan football season is just 15 days away and when the Wolverines hit the field, here’s why the defense will be elite.

For good reason, many Michigan football fans don’t like to be overly optimistic. They get sick of the offseason hype machine, especially after so many times in the last decade, things have ended in disappointment.

There’s no question that Michigan football fans have a sky-is-falling attitude that comes about quite quickly. I know, because I’m usually right there. But I’ll definitely still drink the Kool-Aid.

I’ve already went on record saying that Michigan football will play Ohio State for the Big Ten East title the last week of the season, meaning the Wolverines will be 7-0 or 6-1 going into that game.

Overall, the schedule sets up pretty well for the Wolverines and with the way U-M has handled Penn State and Wisconsin at home in recent years, I won’t believe those teams can win in the Big House until I see it.

And while Minnesota is dangerous and Indiana is too, Michigan is just better and even though a loss in one of those two is the most likely before Ohio State and U-M could win both.

There’s a good chance the Wolverines drop one along the way, but I’m as confident as this team as any in recent memory because of the defense.

Obviously, the word elite means a lot of different things. Statistically, Michigan has repeatedly had high-ranking units in total yards and points. But then got smashed by Ohio State, so who cares?

So when I say the words elite, I mean championship level — or at least one good enough to beat the best teams in college football, the Buckeyes included.

Now, that doesn’t mean I think Michigan will beat Ohio State this year. I don’t. But for the first time since 2017, this defense will be able to hold its own and here’s three reasons why.
