Michigan Football: Is there still hope for top target Daymond David?
Michigan football has been pushing hard for 2021 safety Daymon David and here’s the latest on his recruitment.
Michigan football has been involved with some up-and-down recruitments lately and another that the Wolverines are involved with is Daymon David‘s.
While David isn’t necessarily taking forever to make a decision like Rocco Spindler or Drew Kendall, his recruitment is changing by the day, in part because he is one of 2021’s fastest risers.
When Michigan football originally offered David, he was only listed as a two-star recruit according to Rivals and his ranking in the 247 composite for 2021, was outside the top 1,000.
Since Michigan offered, things have dramatically changed. David is now ranked No. 346 in the 247 sports composite rankings and is also the No. 22 safety in the 2021 class.
That jump got Michigan fans excited, because as recently as about a week ago, it seemed like the Wolverines were in the pole position. Wolverines recruiting expert EJ Holland even predicted it.
Yet, the trend of experts with Futurecast picks or crystal balls never came.
Instead, soon after Holland placed his prediction of David to U-M, 247 sports had some of its top experts, Brian Dohn and Steve Wiltfong, project David to Oregon.
The Ducks came in with an offer late and they were the “dream” school. So even though Oregon is a long ways from Maryland, all signs are pointing toward a commitment to the Ducks.
Does Michigan have a chance?
As Michigan football fans have found out with Spindler and Kendall, among others, expert predictions aren’t everything and they aren’t a commitment.
At one time, there were nearly 20 expert predictions for Kendall to land at Michigan. Now, most of those have flipped. The same thing happened in the opposite with Xavier Worthy.
Worthy was trending with picks to Oregon. Then, he delayed his decision and they flipped over to Michigan before he announced his choice of the Wolverines.
And when it comes to David, that’s the best hope. David teased a commitment last week but nothing happened and we don’t when he will decide.
According to Holland ($), as far as Michigan is concerned, the later the better.
"“Oregon is obviously very far away from Baltimore, but he grew up loving the Ducks and called it his dream offer. I could see this as a situation where David is in love with Oregon but doesn’t commit and the shine wears off. However, if he commits now, Oregon will likely be the pick.”"
If David decides without taking visits, then Oregon would likely be the choice. But if he waits, things can turn around. He hasn’t visited either Michigan or Oregon at this point.
Holland also noted that LSU and Alabama have also been showing more interest in David and if either of those schools, offered, it could cause another shift.
Bob Shoop does have a solid relationship with David and Michigan has made him a top priority over the past few months. At one time, it felt like a commitment was possible.
Now, it might depend on getting a visit and hoping that David holds off long enough to allow the Wolverines to sway him.
