Michigan Football: What to make of Joe Milton as unconfirmed starter
By Nick Popio
It may come as a pleasant surprise to some that the inexperienced Joe Milton has presumably taken the reigns in Michigan football’s much-anticipated quarterback battle to replace the departed Shea Patterson.
Joe Milton was proclaimed as a special recruit who possessed the potential to be a number one overall pick in the NFL draft according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Those words appear to be coming to fruition right before our very eyes. The junior signal-caller has been rumored to have surpassed the likes of Dylan McCaffrey and Cade McNamara to earn the gig as Michigan football‘s next worthy gunslinger.
Reports are circulating that Milton has already won the job if the season would’ve begun on time. No one will actually know the truth until the maize and blue suit up or coach Harbaugh is willing to release the juicy scuttlebutt to the public.
Unfortunately, the question of when that important information will become known is anybody’s guess at this point moving forward.
Assuming Milton is primed to take over for Michigan football as the starter, then scouring over his resume sounds like a good idea. He’s got a wealth of athleticism that coaches rave about. His arm is a rocket launcher perfect for deep bombs down the field.
He also has deceptive speed as a runner which makes him a true dual-threat presence capable of about anything. How Milton can read the opposing defenses will ultimately tell if he can be the whole package that they saw in him when getting him to commit.
Analyzing Joe Milton’s Game
The 6-foot-5 Milton has only attempted 11 passes in his brief career, two of which were turnovers.
He’s accumulated three total scores with both his arms and legs, while also seeing action in a combined eights affairs in two years with Michigan football. He doesn’t have the experience that McCaffrey does, but he is still taking the bull by the horns.
Props are in order for doing what many assumed he couldn’t and wouldn’t do coming into the 2020 season. By supposedly beating out McCaffrey, Milton has just begun to scratch the surface on proving the naysayers wrong.
It goes to show what the kid is made up of and it’s clear he has what it takes to live up to the lofty expectations that the coaching staff put on his shoulders from day one.
His scout-team work hasn’t gone unrecognized either. The hard-working efforts that he has put in are ready to be showcased to the world whenever the Big Ten returns to the field.
Harbaugh could realistically have the type of guy he’s been waiting for the first time under center during his five year tenure at his alma mater.
