I spoke with Aaron Sovern, Michigan basketball target Jaden Schutt’s head coach, to find out if it’s true that Jaden made 17 three-pointers in a single game, among other things.

While searching for a photograph of Jaden Schutt to set as the featured image for this article, I decided instead to find someone he closely mirrors. While he’s not quite as polished as a defender, Michigan basketball target Jaden is as good if not better than Franz Wagner from the perimeter.

Spend five minutes on YouTube watching Schutt’s various highlight reels. What you’ll see is Jaden’s smooth stroke that never falters.

The elbow doesn’t kick out, the follow-through is ever-present, and the release point is as consistent as they come. It’s a fundamentally sound shot that rarely misses its target.

Critics will say you can’t judge a player or a shot based on highlight reels. They are edited to remove the ugliness in a person’s game and the videos only feature the successful attempts on both ends of the court.

While that’s usually true, Jaden is a human highlight reel. What I mean by that is you don’t have to edit out anything, it’s all an incredible show put on for the fans.

In one of those showings, Schutt set the state record for most 3-pointers in a game with 17. That’s not a typo; the one is supposed to be in front of the seven. As unbelievable as that is, his coach, Aaron Sovern, a big U-M fan, confirmed Jaden’s tremendous feat.

“Jaden scored 51 points off 17 three-pointers,” coach Sovern told me via email. “The opposition sat in a zone and he was hot early on. Basically, he did all of that damage through 3 quarters. I gave him one possession in the 4th quarter to earn the State record and he went and got it.”

When asked about Michigan’s involvement in Jaden’s recruitment, Aaron was unaware as to how much communication there is between Schutt and the staff. Endlessmotorsports has been the one reporting the contact between the Wolverines and the four-star from Illinois.

The lack of communication has coach Sovern perplexed and a bit embarrassed. Most of the schools in the Big Ten have reached out to Aaron, who is both Yorkville Christian’s Athletic Director and head basketball coach, and most have offered a scholarship to his star basketball player, but not Michigan.

“Jaden gives me a hard time about it,” Sovern told the Chicago Tribune earlier this month. “I wish my favorite would offer him.”

The Wolverines haven’t reached out to the coach, but they have spoken with Jaden on at least a couple of occasions, and appear to be waiting on a sign, or for basketball to return before they offer the 6-foot-5 shooting guard from the 2022 class who’s ranked 85th overall.

It shouldn’t be long before the Wolverines deliver a scholarship offer if Michigan wants to remain a contender for a kid who’s coach, when asked about Schutt’s game, said: “Jaden has length, tremendous athleticism, is a cerebral player, and is the best shooter in the State. He has a smooth, repeatable motion and gets great elevation on his shot.”

Off the court, Jaden is excelling academically and socially. On the court, the staff at Yorkville Christian have high expectations for him this season.

“Jaden comes from a great family and is a wonderful student. He is a student of the game as well,” coach Sovern told me. “We expect big things from Jaden moving forward and he has the mindset and toughness to deliver.”
