Michigan Football: Predicting Wolverines’ 2021 depth chart
Quarterback
Starter: Joe Milton
Backups: Dylan McCaffrey, J.J. McCarthy, Cade McNamara
Unless there is a big change in the rules, incoming freshmen would be eligible for the spring football season and that means five-star recruit J.J. McCarthy could get in the mix.
Wouldn’t that be something?
I do think there’s a good chance it will happen. Players have taken part in spring football for years, there just weren’t games. Now, there could be and if so, why wouldn’t they be able to play?
Theoretically, McCarthy could start four games in the spring and not even burn his redshirt. Say, Milton or McCaffrey struggled, McCarthy could even start against Ohio State, which won’t have Justin Fields.
However, I don’t think McCarthy will start any games in the spring. Joe Milton will win the starting job. He seems to have genuinely taken a step forward. McCaffrey will still get some playing time and the coaches will find a way to use his running talents, but this will be Milton’s team.
At least during the spring season.
