Updating Michigan football’s recruitment of top targets Rayshaun Benny and Daymond David.

Michigan football has done a really solid job of recruiting four-star defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny, but that doesn’t mean that his recruitment is over.

In fact, according to what Benny told EJ Holland of Rivals ($) Thursday, he could wait to make a decision until December or take things even into February.

Benny wants to try and take his visits this fall or whenever that’s possible. Donovan Edwards has said that too, but Benny seems more intent on waiting to make a decision, which probably isn’t a good thing for the Wolverines.

Holland noted that Benny could make up his mind earlier, but here’s more of what he wrote:

"“Penn State has been making a surge, and the Nittany Lions have had success in the Detroit-metro this cycle. On top of that, Benny admitted that he’s been hearing some of the negative buzz about U-M in terms of in-state recruiting. Arkansas, Arizona State and Kentucky are some others to watch.”"

Holland still said he believes Michigan football is in the “pole position” and with six crystal ball projections from 247 sports, he’s not alone in thinking that way. The prospect from Oak Park, Michigan is one of the top priorities left and landing him is essential for the Wolverines.

Michigan in contact with safety target

Another player that U-M would love to bring into the 2021 recruiting class is three-star safety Daymond David.

David is ranked as a low three-star in the 247 sports composite rankings, but he’s been gaining traction quickly. Michigan has been among the schools pushing hardest for the kid out of Maryland, but Oklahoma, Miami, Boston College and Mississippi State are in the mix too.

Just following how much the staff is contacting David and not just safeties coach Bob Shoop, but also Jim Harbaugh, shows what they think of his ability.

The 6-foot-1, 172-pounder has a reputation for being a big hitter and Ed Reed even put in a call to Miami to start recruiting him. So he would be a good get, despite his low ranking right now.

And Shoop was in contact with him again Thursday according to Steve Lorenz of The Michigan Insider ($). Lorenz noted that there are rumblings about the Sooners being the favorite right now, but here’s what David told him about Michigan:

"“They really want me to play (either) safety. I could play (either) safety. They probably want me to play some nickel (because) I can cover people, but, still also role high to the free safety.”"

Michigan could use another defensive back or two in its 2021 recruiting class. Rod Moore is the only safety committed and Ja’Den McBurrows is the only cornerback.

Oklahoma seems to be the biggest threat but the Wolverines have a lot to sell in terms of their defensive backs and sending those guys to the NFL under Harbaugh.

Shoop is a new safeties coach, but Don Brown has been around and say what you will about his defenses in big games, he has sent plenty of players to the NFL.

I’ve been a little more optimistic about David lately. He has more ties to the program and Oklahoma hasn’t had a great reputation for turning out defensive backs lately.

It seems up in the air, but there are no crystal ball projections or Futurecast pics, so this recruiting battle still seems winnable.
