After 19 commitments during the dead period and 21 overall, Michigan football’s recruiting board is shrinking. Here’s the latest on that and a new 2022 offer.

There’s no question that Michigan football needs at least one more defensive back in the 2021 recruiting cycle and truth be told, the Wolverines could use two.

Right now, Michigan football has one recruit committed at both corner and safety.

Ja’Den McBurrows out of Florida, a three-star corner is part of the class, along with three-star safety Rod Moore out of Ohio.

I’ve talked many times about how Rod Moore should be a four star and McBurrows is a really solid Michigan-style corner. He’s a man coverage guy and he will do well with the Wolverines.

But more bodies are needed and another defensive back recruit to watch for Michigan in 2021 is Titus Mokiao-Atimalala.

Mokiao-Atimalala is a four-star prospect according to the 247 sports composite rankings and the No. 3 player in Hawaii in 2021. He’s also ranked 286th overall and the No. 18 athlete.

He’s 6-foot-1, 170 pounds according to his 247 sports profile and since Michigan has recruited him as a wide receiver and a defensive back, his addition to the 2021 class would make sense.

And according to Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider ($), there has been regular communication between the four-star prospect and the coaching staff, mainly safeties coach Bob Shoop.

"“Yes, I have been (in recent contact with Michigan),” Mokiao-Atimalala told The Michigan Insider. “I’ve been talking with them weekly.”"

Marich also noted that head coach Jim Harbaugh has been in conact with him, as well as defensive line coach Shaun Nua. Notre Dame leads with the only crystal ball projection from 247.

Yet, Arizona State, Cal, USC, Nebraska and some others are also in the mix, so landing him won’t be easy, especially if he prefers playing receiver.

But, since Michigan is still recruiting Jayden Thomas, it’s possible they could add a fifth player at the position.

Michigan football’s new 2022 offer

Speaking of athletes, Michigan extended an offer to another athlete, Treyveon Longmire, of Kentucky on Monday. Longmire is a 2022 recruit ranked as a three-star prospect by 247.

At 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, Longmire seems as though he’s being recruited as a safety. He posted photos of Michigan defensive backs and also tagged safeties coach Bob Shoop.

Longmire told March and The Michigan Insider ($) he was interested in visiting. He also said this about his interest in the Wolverines:

"“I’m very interested. They are one of the best programs in the country. I like that they are very competitive and highly ranked year in and out. They are tradition rich and that’s a big plus. Their coaching staff is very good too. They are in the top schools that I could see myself playing for.”"

Boston College, Cincinnati, Florida State, Louisville, Kentucky, Michigan State, Nebraska, Purdue, TCU, Tennessee and West Virginia have all offered Longmire, who is unranked in the 247 composite rankings. He’s also hearing from Ohio State and Clemson, among others.

Kentucky may be the early leader and the Wildcats hold a crystal ball projection with a confidence of eight but it’s still very early and when visits get going again, that could change a lot.
