Michigan football has made safety recruit Daymon David a top priority in the 2021 class and following a recent interview, we gauge the Wolverines chances.

There’s a lot to like about what Michigan football has done in the 2021 recruiting class. But one area that remains a little light is the secondary, which is where top target Daymon David comes in.

If you aren’t familiar with David, the three-star safety is widely viewed as the top target remaining at the position for Michigan football and if there’s any doubt about that, just look at the way the Wolverines are recruiting David.

As EJ Holland of Rivals reports ($), David has heard frequently from head coach Jim Harbaugh and talks to new safeties coach Bob Shoop a lot. Now, Shoop didn’t necessarily come to Michigan with the reputation as a recruiter, but he’s been an asset and he is in this recruitment.

Here’s what David told Holland about Shoop ($) is a recent interview:

"“We talk about something new every day,” David said. “He shows me how I can fit into the system and make a lot of plays. He’s a cool dude. I like him a lot. It’s big-time that he’s coached top defenses because I’m trying to get developed.”"

David who is from Reisterstown, Maryland, also seems to be building a connection with Harbaugh. He also mentioned Harbaugh’s brother, John, who is head coach of the Ravens, who happen to be David’s team.

“He’s really funny,” David said of Jim Harbaugh to Holland ($). “We have a lot of good talks. Of course, his brother (John) is an NFL head coach. That’s a big connection because if I go as hard as I can then I can be a first round pick. And I’m a Ravens fan (laughs).”

David also listed his top schools to Holland, in this order via the quote: “My top schools right now would be Michigan, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Indiana and Boston College.”

David mentioned guys like Charles Woodson and Jabrill Peppers and while I recently thought Oklahoma might be the leader for David, the Sooners haven’t exactly been a factory for defensive backs lately have they?

Michigan hasn’t really either, but Peppers was a first-rounder and David Long went in round three. Ambry Thomas also appears headed for the NFL.

David reiterated that he wants to make a decision later in the process, however, if that process doesn’t include visits, Michigan may have an edge.

Either way, it feels like Michigan is gaining traction with David and while it might be too early to call them the leader, I like where the Wolverines stand in this recruiting battle.
