Michigan football started workouts last Friday and camp is set to begin soon, so here are the five biggest questions the Wolverines must answer in 2020.

A year ago, people thought it was going to be Michigan football‘s year. A number of people predicted a Big Ten East title and a win over Ohio State.

Some even went as far as to predict that Michigan would go undefeated. After all, the Wolverines had a veteran returning at quarterback, one who was fresh off a productive season and turned down entering the NFL draft.

The Wolverines also had a new-fangled offense installed by offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, which was supposed to get the most out of Michigan’s talent-laden receiving core that had Nico Collins, Donovan Peoples-Jones and Tarik Black, three former top-100 recruits.

Phil Steele, the venerable college football analyst, even drank the Kool-Aid, predicting that Jim Harbaugh would get over the hump and beat the Buckeyes in 2019. In 2020, he has U-M finishing third in the Big Ten East.

Of course, we all know what happened. The offense took time to get going, Shea Patterson didn’t play as well as expected, although he was very good at times (let’s be fair) and Michigan football didn’t beat Ohio State.

To say last season’s 9-4 mark was a disappointment is an understatement. The Wolverines showed in impressive wins over Iowa and Notre Dame, they can beat and control high-end competition.

They didn’t even play that poorly against Alabama or Ohio State. The Wolverines QB and their defense just wasn’t good enough.

Will that change in 2020? Well, those are just a couple of the five biggest questions facing Michigan football this season, which may or may not happen.
