Michigan Football: Breaking down decision date of Rocco Spindler
Top Michigan football target Rocco Spindler said in a recent interview he would make his decision August 8. Here’s what that means for the Wolverines.
Michigan football has been on a roll when it comes to recruiting with 18 commitments since the end of March, following the pledge of Xavier Worthy Friday.
The Wolverines have 20 total commitments in the 2021 class, but there is still plenty of work to do. Michigan is still trying to land some of its top priorities and one of those is four-star, in-state offensive lineman Rocco Spindler.
Spindler is from Clarkston, Michigan and is ranked as the 50th overall player in the 247 composite rankings and the No. 3 player in the state of Michigan. His recruitment has been a Michigan-Notre Dame affair for a while now and it will come to a head, according to an interview Spindler did with the Detroit News on Aug. 8.
“I’ll have the decision made before my senior year and if we don’t have a season I’d just focus on my last semester and then just be excited to go to college early in January,” Spindler said.
What it means for Michigan football
Recently, it was reported Spindler’s plan was to commit around Aug 15, so it’s clear he has been thinking of an earlier timeline. Previously, Spindler said he wanted to wait and take visits in the fall, but with that looking more uncertain, many players are deciding sooner.
For Michigan, if Spindler sticks to this timeline, it has to be interpreted as a good sign. The crystal balls at 247 sports are split and Notre Dame actually has more Futurecast selections from Rivals but this recruitment feels very much like Braiden McGregor’s.
While Spindler does seem to have a strong affinity for Notre Dame, Michigan just seems like the perfect fit. His dad even said he envisions Rocco playing offensive line at the University of Michigan.
Spindler has a great relationship with the Michigan coaching staff and also director of recruiting Matt Dudek. It would also be hard not to notice the job being done by Ed Warinner, who just sent four guys to the NFL and is ready to send Jalen Mayfield in the first round as soon as 2021.
I’m not comfortable at all and Spindler’s decision is still about a month away. That’s light years in recruiting. Lots of things can change, but my interpretation is that this is a good sign for the Wolverines and if this timeline is accurate, I think Spindler picks Michigan over Notre Dame.
