Michigan football has a need at defensive tackle in the 2021 recruiting class and LSU commit Anothony Hundley is the latest key target at the position.

Defensive tackle is a key position of need for Michigan football in the 2021 recruiting class, but as of right now, the Wolverines don’t have any players committed at the position.

That could change and soon hopefully, as four-star defensive tackle George Rooks is a guy who appears to be leaning towards Michigan football and could commit at any time. The Wolverines are also in good shape with in-state defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny, who is ranked 189th overall in the 247 composite rankings.

Yet, another defensive tackle that the Wolverines have targeted is LSU commitment Anthony Hundley, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive tackle from Miami, Florida.

Hundley has been committed to the Tigers since November, but Michigan football offered him back in June and according to Steve Lorenz of 247 sports, since the offer, the staff has made him a priority ($).

Hundley has 17 total offers including a bunch from SEC schools such as South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, as well as offers from Florida State and Miami. Clearly, LSU stood out and it doesn’t seem like any other program is pushing for Hundley outside of Michigan, which is trying to get him to flip.

It’s hard to know how receptive Hundley has been or will be, but LSU has added multiple defensive tackles the past two cycles and has another committed already in 2021. Michigan, on the other hand, is thinner at the position, which could be a selling point.

With 19 commitments already in the 2021 class, Michigan football doesn’t have much wiggle room in terms of numbers, so that’s another thing to think about with the pursuit of Hundley.

If Michigan is able to get Xavier Worthy this week, as well as Rooks, Benny and hopefully Rocco Spindler and Donovan Edwards down the road, the class would already be at 24. That doesn’t even Drew Kendall, a recruit long considered a Michigan lean or Kamonte Grimes, even Jayden Thomas.

It’s possible Michigan doesn’t feel as solid with Rooks and it’d be hard to tell. He’s pretty quiet. But Hundley could be a backup option for him or Benny, someone else to pursue just in case.

However, if Michigan was willing to take three defensive tackles, you have to wonder what that could mean for someone like Kendall. He has said he wants to commit this month and at this point, it’s worth asking, what’s he waiting for?

Is he getting reservations about possibly being part of a six-man offensive line class? There have always been rumblings about him potentially being a defensive tackle too. He’s 6-foot-4, 260 pounds. It just seems like something is holding him back from committing.

We’ll see what happens this month, but if he doesn’t pull the trigger with an announcement, I would really start to doubt whether Kendall will join the 2021 class.
