Michigan Football: 3 Areas of concern for Dylan McCaffrey
By Nick Popio
His Deep Ball Throwing
McCaffrey didn’t take to many deep shots in the moments he performed out on the field in the past. That’s arguably because the coaches didn’t call many for him to take or he wasn’t comfortable enough in himself to launch it that far yet.
It’s clear that he is trusted as a runner first and passer second. On the rare occasion that he did sling it for the fences, there’s still a lot left to be desired on his part. For example, the toss towards Ambry Thomas in the 2018 victory over Nebraska was underthrown.
McCaffrey needs to work on developing a sense of touch when lofting the ball in the air on those certain plays. The more repetitions, the better. Fortunately, he’s got a weapon in Nico Collins that specializes in just that. And it is no secret that Gattis, Michigan football’s second-year coordinator, loves to wrinkle in deep bombs throughout a drive.
Timing will be a key focal point to access in the fall. Getting on the same page with the first-team offense takes as much time as humanly allowed. The faster the squad gets on campus and vibes, then the more work they can handle as they grow closer together. This offseason has already proven that.
