As the Michigan basketball staff organizes the recruiting board, certain prospects begin to jump out at you. Some because of their high rating, and others for just the opposite reason.

In Juwan Howard’s first complete offseason, there were mixed results. Michigan basketball was, at one point, supposed to be the destination for a pair of five-stars. That didn’t happen, but Juwan didn’t spend all of his time and effort on two recruits. He was still able to attract four top prospects and the No. 1 class in the Big Ten.

That’s not to mention the two transfers: Chaundee Brown, the big shooting guard from Wake Forrest that should be eligible, and Mike Smith, the grad-transfer point guard from Columbia who can and does score from anywhere on the court.

Outside of Smith, who developed quickly into a top-notch scoring guard by the time he arrived in New York City, everyone has stars and high major offers.

That tells me a couple of things:

  1. Juwan pays attention to the scouts and recruiting boards.
  2. And he completely disregards them at the same time.

This becomes even more evident with the recent offers and the acquisition of Isaiah Barnes for the 2021 class. Juwan had very little to go on with Barnes and yet he pulled the trigger on a guy that at the time was not on the radar for most of the well-known programs.

Juwan has also been heavily recruiting some other prospects that have gone under the radar.
