Michigan Football: Wolverines may take just one more DB in 2021 class

Michigan football has about 9-10 spots to fill in its 2021 recruiting class and the way the numbers are stacking up, it could mean just one more DB.

After adding 15 commitments since the end of March, the Michigan football program has been filling up quickly in the 2021 recruiting cycle and now with 17 players verbally pledged, those spots are starting to run out.

The average amount of players in a class is about 25 and Michigan football is expected to be in that 25-26 range. If that proves to be the case, it would mean that currently, the Wolverines have about 8-9 sports up for grabs.

As I broke down earlier, these four targets, all have a very strong chance of committing to Michigan football sometime this summer, one of which will happen Saturday when Quintin Somerville is expected to commit.

The others that Michigan is sitting strongly with are wideout Christian Dixon, defensive tackle George Rooks and offensive lineman Drew Kendall. The Wolverines are also trending with expert picks for Rocco Spindler, Donovan Edwards and Kamonte Grimes.

If Michigan was able to land all seven names listed above, which does seems possible, it’d leave only a spot or two left. Obviously, a lot can change in a short period of time in recruiting, but it’s safe to say the Wolverines lead in each of those recruitments.

That would push the total number in the class to 24, with other targets like Rayshaun Benny still out there, as well as others such as running back Tavierre Dunlap, a personal favorite of mine. Jayden Thomas, a wide receiver, could be another possibility, along with a number of different prospects in the secondary.

However, if the Wolverines are able to land Grimes, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound athlete who Michigan football would like to see at corner/safety, the program may not need to take another DB, which is what Brice Marich of the Michigan Insider reported Thursday ($), writing:

"“I’m told taking another safety isn’t a for sure thing or a must with this class. The Maize and Blue brass continue to feel incredibly happy with the pick-up of Rod Moore.”"

Michigan has just one commit at corner too in Ja’Den McBurrows, but if Grimes were to join the class, he could add a body at both positions and that may be enough.

The other thing is that the Wolverines aren’t sitting that strongly with their top cornerback targets, and with all the guys added at safety in previous classes, coupled with the fact that 2020 recruit Eamonn Dennis is coming to Michigan as a corner, not a wideout, reduces the need.

And with fewer and fewer spots available for Michigan in its 2021 recruiting class, the Wolverines should do their best to be choosy about talent and not chase after position needs.
