Michigan Football: Andre Seldon, Giles Jackson are perfect for zero
Players are now able to wear No. 0 thanks to a change in the NCAA rules and for Michigan football, two perfect fits will wear it next season.
There is something significant about a number. At Michigan football, that’s especially true about some. Take the No. 1 and wide receivers for instance.
But one number that has zero tradition with Michigan football or any other program is the number zero. That’s because the NCAA didn’t allow players to wear that number before, a rule that was recently changed.
Now, it’s come out that not one, but two Michigan football players will wear that number next season as Giles Jackson and incoming freshman Andre Seldon announced on Twitter Friday.
Seldon, a 5-foot-8 corner with tremendous speed was the first to come out and say that he was going to wear the number for Michigan football next season and seeing that speed is one of his strengths, it made sense.
But then Jackson responded that he was also going to wear the number, which also made sense, because if you watched Jackson play last season, you will know he’s quite speedy too.
I guess that tells us that Seldon and Jackson won’t be on the same special teams units this season, unless they decide to switch numbers temporarily in order to do so. That’s actually more common than people might think.
But Jackson is usually only returning kicks on special teams and with an expanded role at receiver/running back/wherever next season, he may no longer have that duty, although it’d be a shame, cause he would likely be one of the most dangerous return guys in the Big Ten.
Seldon also may not play on special teams at all. The four-star corner enrolled early for the Wolverines and during that time, he impressed cornerbacks coach Mike Zordich and should push for playing time.
Outside of looking cool, the numbers also fit Seldon and Jackson uniquely because their games are based so much on speed and the lower numbers, outside of quarterbacks, have generally been those kinds of players.
Whatever the number, it’s going to fun seeing what Jackson and Seldon do on the field in 2020.
