Michigan Football: Wolverines still pushing for 2021 OT Garrett Dellinger
Michigan football doesn’t appear to be the favorite when it comes to four-star tackle Garrett Dellinger but the Wolverines aren’t giving up yet.
Predictions can be a dangerous things when it comes to recruiting and hopefully, for Michigan football, all the projections of Garrett Dellinger to LSU will end up being wrong.
Right now, if you check out Dellinger’s profile on 247 sports, you will see nothing but crystal ball picks for LSU, the defending national champs. The Tigers have all nine of the predictions for the prospect from Clarkston, Michigan, but that doesn’t mean the Wolverines are throwing in the towel. In fact, they are pushing just as hard from what Dellinger told The Michigan Insider ($).
"“I talk to Coach Harbaugh and Coach Warinner about everyday. Just waiting for the virus to die out, so I can go on an official visit. Coach Warinner is excited to get me on campus for an official visit and they see me as a great offensive tackle at Michigan.”"
Dellinger is 6-foot-6 and 280 pounds and he’s a solid top-100 prospect, ranking 71st overall in the 247 sports composite rankings and 75th according to 247 sports own rankings. He’s also an elite tackle prospect and one of the best players in the state of Michigan.
But, just like with some others such as Rocco Spindler, who is a teammate of Dellinger’s, Donovan Edwards or Jamari Buddin, Michigan football seems to be losing traction and could risk a number of talented, in-state recruits going elsewhere.
The good news with Dellinger is that Michigan football sounds like it will at least get a visit. Dellinger noted that he planned to visit in June, which is critical because once you get a kid on campus, you never know what can happen.
Dellinger has visited before but that was back in 2018 and at the very least, another visit would give the Wolverines time to turn things around. if Michigan could land Spindler, maybe it would help, although teammates don’t seem to make commitment decisions based on that often.
When the Wolverines seemed to be on solid ground with David Davidkov, it didn’t seem that losing Dellinger would be as damaging. But outside of Giovanni El-Hadi, who is already committed and three-star target Tristan Bounds, the tackle board is a little bleak.
However, Michigan just had four offensive lineman picked in the 2020 NFL draft, so Ed Warriner should at least be able to keep the Wolverines in it for now.
