Michigan Football: Predicting landing spots for Wolverines draft hopefuls
By Nick Popio
A dozen or so eligible draftees will realize their dreams this weekend as they move on from Michigan football to the NFL.
Since Jim Harbaugh arrived as the head coach for Michigan football, the Wolverines have turned into a steady factor of NFL talent. Starting Thursday, with the 2020 NFL draft, which runs through Sunday, plenty of Wolverines should hear their name called and here are some potential landing spots.
Cesar Ruiz-First or Second Rounder
Round one is not out of the question for the premiere interior force in this draft. A needy club at center such as Dallas took Travis Frederick in the first seven years ago. Ruiz was dominant with Michigan football last season and can step in from the first snap to replace him if given the chance. Jerry Jones has been known to be a crafty dealmaker, so trading back and targeting Ruiz later in the first appears relatively viable.
Josh Uche-Second Rounder
The Ravens or Patriots always feel like one of those teams to grab a player of Uche’s caliber around this point. Uche ideally fits in a 3-4 system where he can stand up on the outside or attack with his hand in the dirt and nowadays you can never have enough of pass rushers to get after signal callers.
Ben Bredeson-Third or Fourth Rounder
Bredeson was a sound blocker all four years with the Michigan football team. He didn’t allow a sack during his senior year and may go earlier in the draft depending upon how things play out. Clubs that could hire Bredeson include Seattle, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Miami, Carolina, Baltimore, or the Jets.
Donovan Peoples Jones-Day Three Pick
In a rich wide receiver draft DPJ will probably get taken because of his upside that he didn’t necessarily show enough of while in Ann Arbor. Several squads are in the arena to obtain multiple wideouts throughout the three-day event. Returning kicks and punts is a coup for himself that will help his stock rise.
LaVert Hill-Day Three Pick
Hill is being considered as a nickel corner at the next level for his height requirements. The Seahawks would be a likely landing spot with the fact that his brother is a backup in their revamped secondary.
Josh Metellus-Day Three Pick
Metellus is likely to get selected late with all his experience of playing time he possesses to his advantage. That gives Metellus life to make it on special teams and work his way up the ladder.
Khaleke Hudson-Day Three Pick
Hudson was never the same after his standout sophomore season. He did lead the Wolverines in tackles and projects as a safety moving forward. He’s another special teamer if he can handle the big leagues.
Shea Patterson, Michael Onwenu and Jon Runyan are the next closest targets who have slim chances at hearing their names called in the draft from Michigan football. Jordan Glasgow is another name to watch.
Onwenu had a solid senior year that ought to get him some late eyes on him, while Runyan stood his ground respectfully against Chase Young, not to mention his father’s bloodlines. Patterson has an uphill battle to stay on the field with his inconsistency. Glasgow was a tackling machine but it remains to be seen if he will be among the Wolverines selected.
