Michigan football landed its fifth commitment in the month of April and ninth overall for the 2021 recruiting class in three-star TJ Guy.

While April may not have been kind to the hoops team, the Michigan football team landed its fifth commitment this month as the Wolverines landed three-star defensive end TJ Guy, out of Massachusetts.

Guy was formerly a Boston College commit who re-opened his recruitment. After that, Michigan football was the clear favorite and on Friday, Guy made the choice official, announcing his verbal commitment on Twitter.

Some Michigan football fans may see that he’s only a three-star prospect and that his national ranking for 2021 759th, as well as being ranked 44th among weakside defensive ends according to the 247 sports composite rankings.

Guy might not be highly rated, but he does have lots of upside. He’s listed at 6-foot-4, 240 pounds and he’s physical. His highlights also show him playing offensive line, actually tackle to be specific and he looks like a beast. At the very least, he shows the kind of explosion you want to see from a lineman on either side of the ball.

Boston College was the biggest contender for Guy, along with Virginia. Nebraska was another team out of the Big Ten to offer, as well as a slew of schools in the ACC.

With his frame, Guy will easily be able to add some weight and will probably bulk up, sort of like Kwity Paye. That’s probably who Guy reminds me the most of with his strength and pass-rush ability.

Guy definitely knows how to use his length to his advantage. As an offensive tackle, he does a great job of extending and he does the same as a defensive end. He uses that to create leverage and in the run game, he just trashes offensive lineman and is very disruptive.

Of course, it’s hard to gauge prospects like Guy because the high school competition in the Northeast isn’t necessarily elite. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be a success.

Again, a Paye comparison makes sense. Kwity came to Michigan football as a three-star from Rhode Island and was listed at 6-foot-4, 247 pounds. Now, he’s over 260 and Guy could make that same transition very easily.

If not, he could play a role similar to Josh Uche, however, with his build, his length and his toughness, he seems like a perfect fit as a more traditional defensive end.
