Michigan basketball will lose guard David DeJulius to the transfer portal which means that some sort of backcourt addition has to be coming.

All of the questions surrounding Michigan basketball and its roster for next season will be answered within the next two months and some of the key questions, can be answered within weeks.

With the fact that Michigan basketball was over the scholarship limit heading into next season, it seemed like some departures were only a matter of time, but Monday came the news that David DeJulius had entered the transfer portal.

It wasn’t a shock if you had been paying attention to what Michigan basketball was doing. The Wolverines expressed interest in three different graduate transfers at point guard from the Ivy League and that had to be connected to DeJulius, at least in some way.

The push for those guys doesn’t seem really hard but that could all depend on what happens with Joshua Christopher on April 13, when according to some like Ant Wright, he will be deciding between Michigan basketball and Arizona State.

It’s hard to say if he will commit for sure and until he and Isaiah Todd sign their letters of intent, nothing is really in the bag. But no matter what happens, expect the Wolverines to add some sort of guard. At this point, they almost have to.

If Christopher ends up going elsewhere, Michigan would have just Eli Brooks, Zeb Jackson, Adrien Nunez and Cole Bajema at the guard spot. Franz Wagner can obviously play the two as well, but having Christopher there would be much better and if not him, Brooks, paired with another point guard would work too.

That guard could have been DeJulius, if Christopher wasn’t coming, which makes you want to believe he is. 247 sports has been projecting him to the Wolverines, with all of his crystal balls going to UM for quite some time, but it still feels fluid.

Maybe because Michigan basketball isn’t used to landing five-star prospects lately, although Todd committed this past year. Arizona State isn’t really a powerhouse either, but Christopher’s brother plays there and that has to mean something.

It seems, at this point, that Christopher is option one and the graduate transfer are option two. Hopefully, Michigan doesn’t have to force a move at point guard, but if Christopher doesn’t wind up in Ann Arbor, it might end up happening.
