Michigan football is always looking for scrappy defensive backs and one that could fit the Wolverines is three-star Robert Regan out of California.

If it seems like Michigan football has been interested in a lot of three-star prospects lately, you aren’t alone. It’s also just part of the process.

Not every recruit is going to be a four or five-star kid and sometimes, these three-star kids identified early can blossom and move way up. Tight end Matthew Hibner is one example.

He was ranked outside the top 1,000 when he first committed to Michigan football and some fans rolled their eyes, as to say, big deal. Then, the kid moved into the top 400 of the 247 composite rankings and in the specific rankings put out by 247 sports, Hibner is 133rd overall and the No. 7 tight end.

So that just goes to show that evaluation is more important than what the rankings say, especially when you get past the top 100 or 200 prospects. While Michigan football has offered or expressed interest in some three-star recruits, one three-star who should get an offer very soon is cornerback Robert Regan.

Regan has heard from Michigan, according to Greg Biggins of 247 sports, who also reported that if Regan got an offer, he would take a visit to Ann Arbor ($).

In the current rankings, Regan actually sits pretty strong. He’s No. 381 overall and the 5-foot-10 corner is 28th at his position and 33rd in the state of California. The only crystal ball projection on his 247 sports profile has him going to Wisconsin, but Michigan football making an offer and hosting him for a visit, whenever that might happen, could be a game-changer.

Regan also has offers from Florida, LSU, Oregon, Utah, Boise State, Arizona, Auburn, BYU, Arizona State and others among a diverse selection of schools from the South, Midwest and West.

Michigan hasn’t joined the list but appears close to doing so and Regan seems well worth an offer. Watching his highlights, he has the ability to play press-man coverage, while also sitting back in zone and reading the quarterback.

One of his strengths, and again, it’s a highlight video, but he seemed to have a knack for reading the quarterback and finding the ball. Multiple times, he was playing quarters or off coverage, only to peel off his guy and make a play on the ball.

It was impressive and so were his ball skills. Yet, he also flashed the ability to get up and press on the line of scrimmage.

Regan seems like a great fit in the Wolverines’ scheme and it will be interesting to see if he winds up getting a formal offer soon.
