Michigan Football: GBMWolverine writers predict next starting QB
Michigan football doesn’t have an obvious starter at quarterback for the 2020 season so the writers at GBMWolverine opined who would take the leading role.
There isn’t an exact formula on how to develop an elite quarterback. Michigan football‘s Jim Harbaugh has been heralded as a quarterback whisperer, although when you look around college football and see Joe Burrow (ranked 280th in high school) going from unknown to a Heisman and National Championship winning phenom, you wonder who’s the real whisperer.
Jim will get another chance to prove his QB development skills as he and his staff take two, or three, guys they recruited and send at least one of them on the field consistently.
Here’s who the GBMWolverine writers think will be that guy.
The QB battle for the Wolverines will be the biggest storyline for the football team ahead of the 2020 season. There are two candidates that have separated themselves from the rest of the QB room. Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton.
McCaffery and Milton are two dynamic talents with different skill sets. Milton has a cannon of a right arm. McCaffery can beat teams with his legs, he has speed for days.
With spring ball being cancelled, both players are missing out on valuable reps. They are both entering year two of Josh Gattis’ offense working to gain report with the backs and receivers.
Harbaugh will have a tough decision before the season kicks off against Washington. I believe that he goes with experience and sends McCaffery out to lead the offense.
Dylan McCaffrey, without a doubt. Give the kid a chance. He was the guy that Harbaugh brought in and said, you are my guy. You are my Andrew Luck at Stanford. The six-foot five-inch senior has been waiting for his turn ever since he arrived at Michigan. But, the torch has never been passed to him.
I’ll give you an example when I was in high school. I was the shooting guard that came off the bench and barely got any minutes. If I missed my first two shots, I would be pulled back to the bench. Little did my coach know, that killed any momentum, confidence, and rhythm that I had. Do you expect Dylan McCaffrey to go in late into a blowout game and perform like a 5-star recruit? The kid has never been given the confidence by Harbaugh and has been believing throughout his entire college career that he is the second guy.
Give the stud out of Valor Christian High School a chance, and I guarantee you Michigan will be in the college football playoff next year competing for a national title. You need unique; You need risky; You need potential. Dylan McCaffrey has all of that. He might not be the consistent Shea Patterson who could throw for 250 yards, two touchdowns, and a turnover, but look where Shea got the Michigan football team during his two years as QB1. McCaffrey has all the potential in the world to be the guy that breaks the five-year losing streak to Ohio State, so give him a chance, and let the kid work his magic.
Dylan McCaffrey seems to be the obvious choice for now, but things can change in the blink of an eye. He fits the system better than Milton because of his running ability. It really comes down to whom the coaching staff trusts most and can put in the most work during the offseason. If the season started tomorrow I would put my money on McCaffrey starting with certain packages being used for Milton throughout different moments of games, just like they used in the past with Patterson.
I have thought for hours about who would win out between Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton. It’s a hard position battle to call. I definitely think it’s down to those two guys and either way, I think Michigan football will be just fine at QB. I also have a feeling that both guys will see time this season. Not sure how that will look but I am talking meaningful situations. Not just blowouts and garbage time. Milton has an incredible arm, while McCaffrey seems more polished. My gut tells me that Harbaugh goes with McCaffrey but that Milton still has a role to play.
