Michigan basketball got some good news on Wednesday and it had nothing to do with recruiting but it will help and that’s keeping Saddi Washington.

There might not be any games going on right now, but in terms of news, it never seems to stop and for Michigan basketball fans, there was some positive news coming out Wednesday.

This news doesn’t come from the Michigan basketball program itself. Instead, it’s from a source close to the program speaking to Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider.

However, Sam is about as good as it gets in terms of reliable info about the Wolverines and he’s a trustworthy source. So when he reported that assistant coach Saddi Washington was staying put, following some interest from Western Michigan, you can just about take it to the bank.

Washington came to Michigan under head coach John Beilein and was retained under Juwan Howard, which was viewed as a critical move for the Wolverines. And this past season, both as a recruiter and a coach, Washington has proven his worth.

He’s ranked as one of the top recruiters in the country right now and his work developing both wing players and bigs has really given him a lot of value. It’s not a surprise that Western Michigan was after Washington, but the smart choice was probably to stay.

According to Webb’s article, there are some family interests that could keep him in Ann Arbor. Yet, the only thing is that Washington could be getting better job offers soon. The Wolverines, if things work out with Isaiah Todd and Joshua Christopher, could have one of the most talented rosters in the country next season.

If you add those guys to a talented roster that could feature both Franz Wagner and Isaiah Livers, Michigan basketball could be among the best teams in the country and being on that staff certainly wouldn’t hurt Washington who is already making $330,000 a year and doesn’t need to jump at the first job offer to come his way.

While his should mean that Washington is back next season, don’t expect him to stay forever. He’s going to be a head coach at some point and part of the reason he probably turned down Western Michigan is that his profile is growing and soon, maybe as soon as next season, he will have some better offers to consider than what Western Michigan has to offer.
