Michigan football made the top six for elite 2021 tight end Thomas Fidone who is a Nebraska lean. Can the Wolverines make up enough ground to land him?

Despite the fact that schools aren’t allowed to meet with recruits in person right now, things haven’t slowed down much on the news front for Michigan football and others.

A number of top players have announced their top five or top six and one of those included Michigan football Monday as Council Bluffs, Iowa tight end Thomas Fidone, the No. 2 tight end in the 2021 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings, included the Wolverines in his top six.

Fidone announced the finalists on a video he posted to his Twitter account. The list also includes Nebraska, which is the favorite right now, along with Michigan, Notre Dame, Iowa, Penn State and LSU.

Right now, Nebraska controls five of the seven crystal ball projections that have gone out for Fidone. The other two are foggy right now, giving the Huskers five out of seven.

The 6-foot-4, 218-pounder is a dynamic athlete and he’s the classic move tight end. In the new speed-in-space offense, Michigan football isn’t necessarily looking for that old-school, in-line tight end. The Wolverines want athletes that can create mismatches and Fidone is the ideal fit.

In the 247 sports specific rankings, he’s viewed even more favorably, listed as the No. 40 player overall in his class, as well as being recognized as the top overall tight end.

It seems like the Huskers, who are close in proximity, have built a solid relationship with Fidone, however, in-state power Iowa should also be in the mix, especially considering the Hawkeyes just sent two tight ends to the NFL in the first round of the 2019 draft.

But for Michigan football, there is still hope. Sherrone Moore is one of the Wolverines top recruiter and he is the primary when it comes to Fidone. Outside of LSU, all the programs are within the Big Ten, outside of Notre Dame and that feels like a battle U-M can win.

Michigan has a good a shot as any of those teams of having success, in terms of contending for titles and getting to the playoff. The Wolverines also have Gattis and some talented quarterbacks waiting in the wing.

In short, Michigan has a lot to offer Fidone, at least more it seems than Nebraska. However, that’s the thing in recruiting, when you program has that relationship with a kid, it can be hard to overcome and with Fidone, we will see if the experts are right about Nebraska.
