Michigan Football: Rocco Spindler praises Jim Harbaugh, J.J. McCarthy
Michigan football has been heavily recruiting top in-state target Rocco Spinder, who had good things to say about Jim Harbaugh and J.J. McCarthy.
There is no doubt that Michigan football is enough of a force in the midwest to put together a solid recruiting class in 2021. The Wolverines have a bunch of in-state talent to pick from, a five-star quarterback committed and a talented staff.
And heck, whether it was Jim Harbaugh at the helm, Brady Hoke or even Rich Rodriguez, Michigan football has been able to put together highly-ranked recruiting classes and this next cycle should be no different.
What is different is that with all the high-profile prospects in the state, such as Donovan Edwards and offensive/defensive lineman Rocco Spindler, Michigan football should have a shot at more elite-level recruits than in most cycles.
Spindler is a top-50 prospect and he’s a guy that looks like he will be a dominant force wherever he ends up playing, whether it be an offensive guard or defensive tackle or wherever.
The Clarkston prospect is 6-foot-5 and closing in on 300 pounds. He’s ranked 49th overall according to the 247 sports composite rankings and is the No. 2 guard as well as the No. 3 player in the state of Michigan.
Just as with other in-state prospects, such as Edwards, Michigan football has felt like the favorite with Spindler, even though Notre Dame has gained more traction lately. Spindler is set to visit Ann Arbor in April before he commits in May and Tom Loy of 247 sports caught up Spindler and asked him about the Wolverines ($).
The good news for Michigan fans is that Spindler had good things to say about Harbaugh. Here’s what he told Loy ($):
"“He’s a great coach. A lot of people say he won’t be there long, but I think he’s doing something really special, especially with the guys he’s recruiting,” said Spindler of Harbaugh. “I think they’ve got to just figure out one or two things, and they could be a national championship team and they can win a Big-10 championship. There’s just those small, little increments that they need to fix and I think they could possibly be the one team that wins it all.”"
Spindler also had some really good praise for J.J. McCarthy, who will likely be Spindler’s quarterback if he joins the Wolverines and from what he said to Loy, he wouldn’t mind playing along with the No. 1 player in the state of Illinois for 2021.
"“We’ve gotten really close. He’s a busy guy and I’m a busy guy, but we can catch up when we’ve got time,” said Spindler of McCarthy ($). “He really explains why he wants to be the best and I share why I want to be the best. In his bedroom, he’s got this huge wall of all the things he wants to accomplish and all the naysayers.”"
At the end of the day, Michigan is one of the favorites for Spindler, but Notre Dame is right there. It feels like a 50/50 thing right now and the best hope for U-M is that it can close the deal when Spindler visits Ann Arbor in late April, a few weeks before he commits.
