Michigan Football: Top 5 position battles heading into the spring
Who can get a leg up?
It’s really hard to get a read on the quarterback competition and I feel like, even though it’s not ideal, both will get some playing time next season.
Joe Milton has the arm to make all the throws and he might have more potential, but Dylan McCaffrey has played well at times and offers that dual-threat capability, a little more than Milton does.
McCaffrey offers a little more experience which shouldn’t mean much, however, it does seem to mean something to Harbaugh, who tends to stick with veteran players too long. Case in point was last season and Daxton Hill, a guy that should have been starting from day one.
Many Michigan football fans will just be happy to see a change at quarterback and while it is exciting, there is no guarantee Milton or McCaffrey will be better than Patterson or even as good.
As frustrating as Shea was, he did throw 45 touchdown passes the last two seasons and won 19 games. That’s something, especially considering it was 10 wins in a row at one point, so there is that pressure to live up to that.
McCaffrey has looked a little more ready in the past, just with his added experience but that could be different now and if Milton can put together an impressive spring, he can lay the groundwork to becoming the starter.
