Mike Zordich isn’t known as an elite recruiter or anything but the Michigan football coach does know the game and he has U-M in the hunt for a top safety.

The Michigan football program has some very talented recruiters. But generally, cornerbacks coach Mike Zordich isn’t one of the best. He’s certainly not viewed as a big gun by any means.

However, Zordich knows how to coach. He has proven he can develop guys into NFL-caliber defensive backs and it seems like, with certain recruits, that really matters.

Darion Green-Warren, not that I can remember, never mentioned him directly. Yet, he did talk about Michigan football and the way it sent a bunch of guys to the NFL, such as David Long, Lavert Hill this year, Channing Stribling, Jourdan Lewis and others.

So it’s sort of interesting that Zordich is taking a key role in the recruitment of Derrick Davis Jr., a top safety in the class of 2021 and a top-50 prospect overall.

At 6-foot-1, 194 pounds, Davis is an absolute stud and while he doesn’t necessarily have the speed of Daxton Hill, he’s a guy that could be a nickel, as well as a deep safety, which is always valuable in today’s game. Basically, when it comes to the secondary, you need 5-6 guys that can cover, at least in some manner, on the field at all times.

Davis is out of Pennslyvania and right now, Penn State is the leader and controls 50 percent of his crystal ball projections. But the fight for the No. 2 safety prospect in 2021 according to the 247 composite rankings and 44th overall, is just getting started as Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan are all pushing hard, along with Notre Dame.

According to The Michigan Insider ($), head coach Jim Harbaugh and Zordich recently visited Davis, who said the Wolverines are still a factor because of the man coaching corners.

“It’s Coach Zordich… just him being him really,” said Davis, explaining his strong Michigan interest. “He keeps it straight forward with me. Him just showing love towards me, coming to my games, coming to the school, and just talking with me. It don’t even have to be about football. It could be just about life period.”

It’s funny how recruiting works sometimes. You wouldn’t think that Zordich would be a guy you’d want out pitching to top recruits. But each recruit is different and as far as Davis is concerned, Zordich might be the only reason the Wolverines have a shot.
