Michigan basketball has gained momentum in its pursuit of five-star recruit Joshua Christopher and now appears to be the odds-on favorite to land him.
For a while now, you could see that Michigan basketball was gaining with Christopher and there seemed to be whispers that the Wolverines were a real contender to get him.
Then, last month, a couple of recruiting experts from 247 projected Christopher to the Wolverines, giving them two crystal ball predictions. But just in the last few days, Michigan has picked up six more crystal balls, including a projection from Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider.
This means that the Wolverines now own eight of the nine projections and even though that doesn’t necessarily mean Christopher is coming, it’s a strong indication.
Of course, dreams of Christopher, Isaiah Todd and even Greg Brown, who visited Michigan basketball during the win over Michigan State, are dancing in the heads of Wolverines fans as they think back to the original Fab Five and wonder if Howard can put together another?
The 2020 recruiting class is already ranked as the fourth-best in the country with the commitments of Todd, a five-star power forward, Hunter Dickinson, a four-star center and Zeb Jackson, a four-star point guard, as well as four-star forward Terrance Williams and three-star Jace Howard.
That right there is a very talented group and in all reality, the best class of recruits that Michigan basketball has had in years, at least in terms of rankings and pro potential.
Juwan Howard has done a masterful job of selling himself and the Michigan program, which is also coming off a really strong stretch under previous head coach John Beilein. The Wolverines are viewed as a winner and now with Howard, U-M can be viewed as an NBA pipeline too, which to be fair, it also was under Beilein, just not with one-and-done guys.
It remains to be seen what happens with Todd, meaning whether or not he goes to college or plays professionally overseas, but if Michigan can land Christopher and maybe even Brown, it could be a whole new world for the Wolverines.
Even if there isn’t room for everyone on the roster right now. It’s a good problem to have and it will be interesting to watch and see if Christopher narrows his timeline and decides soon.
