A.J. Henning

Michigan’s top recruit for 2020 is none other than Lincoln-Way East’s stellar wide receiver A.J. Henning. The 5-foot-10 speedster is another perfect fit for the Josh Gattis system, and he’s the most likely commit to get on the field immediately.

Recruiting websites:

247 sports Allen Trieu had this to say about A.J. in his evaluation:

"Compact build. Not a prospect who stands out on the hoof, but has a well-developed upper and lower body. Has elite speed. Great burst and acceleration and can score from anywhere on the field. Catches the ball well away from his body and shows the ability to go up and catch passes that are above his head but does need to continue to get more consistent with cleanly catching the easier ones. Good lower body strength and will break tackles. More someone that will run past defenders than a make-you-miss in a phone booth guy. Shows some elusiveness after the catch. Versatile and can play in the backfield, slot or as an outside receiver. Needs to still continue to work on route-running and wide receiver technique if that is what he will do more of in college. Has dealt with some injuries, so staying healthy will be key for him in college. A true home-run threat and one of the more electric players in his class."

Per 247 sports, Henning is ranked 2nd out of Illinois, the 18th WR, and 101st nationally with four-stars and a 9548 composite score. Rivals, like with the other two mentioned, ranked A.J. lower at 21st at his position and 111th overall.

Matt’s musings

Despite being smaller in stature, Henning could start opposite Collins as an outside threat that not only has speed but also the ability to win jump ball contests. Running a 4.46 forty solidifies him as a deep threat that could burn opponents down the stretch.

And the story of his commitment is even more impressive than any statistic out there. As he was heading back home to Illinois, Henning decided he couldn’t wait any longer and forced his driver to turn the car around to meet with the Michigan staff to formally commit to the program.

2020 impact prediction

Expect Henning to be announced as the starter before the season begins and finish his first year off with around 500 yards and five touchdowns. A.J. and Wilson’s speed will play a crucial role in the success of the Wolverines moving forward.
