Michigan Football: Analyzing 4 key January scholarship offers
Michigan football recruiting is in full swing, with over 30 scholarship offers handed out in January. Here’s a look at four key offers.
The Michigan football staff is back on the road after a disappointing nine-win season that ended with a bowl game loss to a Tua-less Alabama squad. Even though the season didn’t go as planned, necessarily, the Wolverines are already looking toward the future by offering scholarships to some of the best football players from around the country.
Over 30 athletes were given the opportunity to play football at the next level at the Big House in the month of January, but since we don’t have to time to go in-depth into each athlete, we will cover four key offers handed out this month.
All four of these student-athletes are apart of the 2021 class, meaning they still have a year before heading to Ann Arbor (if that is their collegiate decision), and they’re all top 25 at their position, meaning that out of the roughly one million total football players nation-wide, they’re one of the best in the nation and could even be considered elite – depending on the person applying the term.
Here’s a look at each of the four.
Taizse Johnson
The day before Christmas top 200 athlete Taizse Johnson proclaimed his top six schools he was considering, which are Alabama, Ohio State, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Maryland, and Florida.
Johnson, a 6-foot-1 290-pound defensive tackle from Washington, D.C., has risen the ranks of high school football climbing all the way to 195th nationally, second in D.C., and 13th overall for his position.
And while Taizse had already appeared to have shut the door on other programs, apparently, the Wolverines didn’t get the memo, and they’re hoping to break into Johnson’s inner circle.
Here’s Taizse’s evaluation from 247 sports Brian Dohn:
"Thick build, but concern about frame length. Three-tech and nose guard capabilities. Can play in 3-4 or 4-3 defense. Plays with low center of gravity. Fast get-off and keeps pad level low. Quick feet getting upfield and redirects well. Strong in lower body. Can collapse pocket. Possesses suddenness and closing speed. Physical at point of attack. Has to make sure minimal weight gain moving forward. Relies heavily on speed and power. Technique must develop. Continued upper body strength development is needed. Multi-year starter at Top 20 program. Day 3 NFL draft pick."
Johnson is a four-star on both 247 sports and Rivals, and while he did receive enough attention to obtain a ranking, neither website provides any indication as to what university he will choose.
