A number of Michigan football players will have NFL decisions to make and one is tight end Nick Eubanks. Here’s why the Wolverines could use him in 2020.

On the offensive side of the ball, Michigan football has a number of key players that will be weighing NFL decisions in the coming weeks.

Some are among the biggest names on the roster, such as wide receivers Donovan Peoples-Jones and Nico Collins. Center Cesar Ruiz is another name to watch as the Wolverines starting center could potentially bolt for the pro ranks after another impressive season.

However, one name that might not jump out immediately, is tight end Nick Eubanks, a redshirt junior that has the ability to return to Michigan football in 2020 if he chooses.

While the 2019 season didn’t necessarily go as some thought it would for Eubanks in the new speed-in-space offense, he certainly proved to be a reliable target for Shea Patterson and hauled in 24 receptions for 240 yards and three touchdowns.

In 2018, he caught eight passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. At 6-foot-5 and 256 pounds, he has the body of an NFL tight end and he made huge strides as a blocker. Eubanks also offers versatility as a guy that can move around the line of scrimmage, just like an H-back.

In an interview with the Michigan Insider ($), Eubanks said he was exploring the NFL draft. Here’s what he said about possibly returning for next season:

"“Personally, I wouldn’t have a problem coming back next year in terms of getting better as an athlete. Being able to work on my craft next year if I do decide to come back. It’s been a decision so far, but I haven’t made it yet.”"

Eubanks said he would get more information on his potential draft status and make a decision based on that. In that regard, his performance against Alabama will be important and like many other Wolverines, he will likely see that as a chance to impress NFL scouts.

But ultimately, Eubanks would be wise to return to Ann Arbor. It’s hard to see him being projected among the top tight ends in this draft class. After all, he wasn’t even the clear starter with Sean McKeon also playing a key role.

But with McKeon graduating, Eubanks would be the starter. Erick All would likely fill the void if Eubanks does turn pro, but the thought of having both in the lineup is much more exciting.

And Eubanks has turned into more than just a receiver. He’s a big part of the running game and while All improved a lot this season as a blocker, a veteran presence would be helpful.

If Eubanks is projected as a mid-round pick and is confident he will get drafted, then leaving is at least understandable. But if he’s closer to being a free agent or late-round pick, he should return. Michigan football could use him and another productive year could boost his stock even more.
