Michigan Football is closing strong with four-star Darion Green-Warren
Michigan football hosted four-star corner Darion Green-Warren this weekend and he made it clear that the Wolverines are a contender.
The Michigan football team may not have been in action on championship Saturday, but the Wolverines still had some important work to do on the recruiting trail.
And while coaches have been all over the country visiting recruits since the end of the regular season, over the weekend, Michigan football hosted some key targets highlighted by four-star corner Darion Green-Warren.
Green-Warren has long been viewed as a USC commit and with Clay Helton sticking around, he could wind up there. Yet, Green-Warren was impressed with his visit to Ann Arbor and it sounds like Michigan football could be a real possibility when he makes his decision later this month.
Here’s part of what Green-Warren said to The Michigan Insider ($) about his visit:
"“The biggest thing (that stood out) was Coach Brown and Coach Z. I love the style of defense they play. They play man with a little cover (two). They’re looking for press cover corner who loves to tackle, and that’s me.”"
That was just a small portion of the interview, but Green-Warren heaped praise on Michigan football. The coaching staff was just one thing he liked and even though the Wolverines defense has struggled at times, it has churned out a lot of NFL talent, especially at corner.
And when you watch his highlights, you can see Green-Warren has the goods.
Mike Zordich isn’t necessarily known as a dynamic recruiter, but he does know how to develop corners.
David Long, Lavert Hill, Jourdan Lewis and Channing Stribling are just a few that have gone on to the NFL. Vincent Gray and Ambry Thomas also took huge steps forward this past season under his leadership.
Green-Warren has talked about narrowing his choices down and it feels like there are two serious contenders: USC and Michigan. The corner told The Michigan Insider ($) he’s down to three.
"“Michigan is right there though, and I’m serious about them. I canceled my visit to Penn State and I’m focusing on Michigan, SC, and Nebraska.”"
Nebraska has been a dark horse and while the Huskers appear to still be in the mix, it’s somewhat obvious that Green-Warren’s decision is really down to the Trojans and Wolverines.
The Harbor City, California prospect could stay close to home with USC and that attraction could hurt U-M’s chances. He’s ranked 13th among the 247 composite rankings at corner and the 6-foot defensive back is ranked in the top 200 overall.
He’d be an ideal fit in Michigan’s man-heavy system and you could certainly see him competing for playing time right away next fall. He indicated a decision will come soon and as of now, the Wolverines staff has done just about everything possible to land him.
