Michigan football fans didn’t want to play Florida again this bowl season and it seems they will get their wish as Alabama looks like it will be the opponent.

In the grand scheme of things, nothing really changed for Michigan football Saturday during championship weekend. However, by the end, it was clear that the Wolverines would likely get a shot to take on Alabama in the bowl season.

In order for that to happen, the Big Ten will need to get three teams into the New Year’s Six, but after a very solid showing by Wisconsin, that seems likely to happen.

With Ohio State going into the College Football Playoff, the Rose Bowl will be able to choose between Penn State or Wisconsin. It doesn’t have to choose the higher-ranked team, but it’s a good bet it will.

As long as the other team ends up in the Cotton Bowl, against most likely Memphis, which won the American Conference championship, Michigan football will be heading to the Capital One Bowl to face Alabama.

At this point, it doesn’t just seem likely. It seems inevitable. Both ESPN projections have Michigan taking on Alabama, as well as 247 sports.

Michigan, Iowa and Minnesota would be the top teams left to choose and the Capital One Bowl isn’t passing on the Wolverines for the Gophers, who lacked attendance in the game a few years ago. On the other hand, when Michigan played Florida, it was very well attended and bowl reps care about that a lot.  The TV ratings would be good too.

Also, it’s a dream matchup and it’s most likely why Alabama will get picked over Auburn, although Michigan and Auburn would be fun too.

But it’s a way to make the Capital One Bowl into an important game during this bowl season as the Nick Saban vs Jim Harbaugh storyline is really hard to pass up. It’s two classic programs and for the Wolverines, it would offer a chance to earn a significant victory.

Alabama isn’t the same team is has been, but the Crimson Tide were maybe a win away from getting into the playoff. This is still an elite program and if Michigan wants to have a chance to reach that level someday, it has to beat the big boys and this would be another chance.

Obviously, there is a chance that U-M gets crushed. Yet, that’s there with every bowl game. But after another rivalry loss, this team should be motivated for a 10th win and the chance to end the season with a win over Alabama, a national program.

And for the fans, it will be even more exciting cause Michigan-Alabama won’t be just another boring bowl game.
