Michigan is a contender

When the new college basketball rankings are released Monday, Michigan basketball will finally be among the top 25 and in all reality, the team should easily be in the top 10 if not the top five.

No other team in college hoops has a resume like the Wolverines through seven games as Michigan has beaten four teams ranked in the top 100 of the Kenpom rankings and two AP top-10 clubs in back-to-back days on a neutral floor.

But what should matter even more, as far as the polls are concerned, is the way Michigan controlled those games. The Wolverines went on a 19-0 run against UNC and a 21-4 run against the Zags. UM led both teams by double figures for the majority of the second half.

The Wolverines also controlled the second halves against Iowa State and Creighton earlier in the season. None of their victories were about luck or escaping in the end. This team has been nothing short of spectacular.

Louisville, which is up next, could be No. 1 Monday, but there is no question, Michigan basketball shouldn’t be far behind. Not after what it just did in three days at the Battle 4 Atlantis.
