Michigan Football: 3 takeaways from Maryland snoozer
By Nick Popio
No Notre Dame Hangover
Jim Harbaugh has his men dialed in after the Notre Dame beatdown one week ago. It couldn’t have started any better with a kick return touchdown and three and out on defense. Jumping out to that 14-0 lead put Maryland behind the eight ball. They sustained drives, but couldn’t capitalize with any points. That set it up for the Wolverines defense to execute what they wanted to do defensively from that point on.
Maryland wasn’t supposed to give the Wolverines a scare, yet Michigan football gave them a couple of opportunities to do so. Josh Mettelus came up with an interception in the redzone that halted a drive with a little help from Mike Danna. On their other trip inside the 20 yard line, Joseph Petrino missed from 37 and the Terps didn’t sniff the redzone until the final moments of the game.
Maryland’s passing game was stymied and didn’t help their cause either. Josh Jackson could only muster 9-20 for 97 yards with an average of five yards per attempt. Javon Leake ended up being the only thing that worked for Maryland with his kick six to match that of Giles Jackson’s on the initial play.
