Michigan Football: 3 takeaways from Maryland snoozer
By Nick Popio
Michigan football methodically wore down Maryland into submission to keep building off of their recent momentum.
Michigan football landed in College Park and took care of business on Saturday afternoon. Giles Jackson immediately ran the opening kickoff to the house for the first time since 2015. After another score, the offense cooled off a bit, but eventually opened the floodgates to put the Terrapins down for good.
Josh Gattis‘ offense pounded out over 300 total yards and didn’t turn the ball over once. They continue to find their groove with a balanced attack going into the final three showdowns. Three ball carries shared the load today with Hassan Haskins being the primary rusher. Zach Charbonnet broke the freshman record for most touchdown, while Tru Wilson shows off why he deserves more playing time.
On defense, the Terps got into the redzone twice, but failed to come away with anything. Michigan’s defenders settled in and would have preserved the shutout if not for a 97 yard kick six. It got to the quarterback four times and did not allow Josh Jackson to throw for 100 yards in the air. Just another ho-hum day of work for Don Brown’s unit.
Special teams played their part in the thumping as well. Giles Jackson’s kick return set the tone, while the fake punt near the end of the first half helped put a drive together to go up 21-0 at halftime. Jake Moody missed a chip shot at the end of the 2nd quarter, then Quinn Nordin got the next shot to bury a 38 yard field goal to regain some of his confidence.
