Michigan Football: Top 5 wins for Jim Harbaugh as Wolverines head coach
No. 2 Winning back Paul Bunyan by beating ranked Michigan State
Going into the 2018 season there was a lot of talk about how Jim Harbaugh hadn’t beaten his rivals. He was 0-3 against Ohio State, he lost to Notre Dame to open 2018 and was just 1-2 at the time against Michigan State.
The Spartans, of course, won at the Big House in 2015 and then did it again on a rain-soaked night in Ann Arbor in 2017. The Wolverines returned the favor in 2016, but that Michigan State team was so bad, Harbaugh didn’t really seem to get credit for beating it, since it was somewhat close against a three-win team.
Last year’s Michigan State team wasn’t great either and finished 7-6. Yet, that shouldn’t discount the first road win of Harbaugh’s Michigan coaching career or a great win over Mark Dantonio and the Spartans.
Taking back the state of Michigan was definitely on the to-do list and this game helped do that, although another win this season will cement that. Patterson broke a 7-7 tie with a 79-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Peoples-Jones and later a Ben Mason touchdown put it away.
The exchange between Devin Bush and Michigan State before the game only made the win even more memorable as did the fact that the Spartans were held to a meager 94 yards of offense.
