Michigan Football: Grading Wolverines victorious rebound vs Rutgers
Michigan Football righted the wrongs and played a near flawless match against a far inferior opponent. Here are the grades for each position group.
After half a decade, the Michigan football fanbase had higher expectations for the 2019 season under head coach Jim Harbaugh. Losing in the manner the Wolverines did in Wisconsin was unacceptable and indefensible. But everything that went wrong in Madison has now been righted. No fumbles, no gaping holes on the defensive line, and no more wasting of talent.
While the game was not without mistakes – Shea Patterson threw an interception – the team clicked in a way we haven’t seen before. There was communication, proper pass protection, and most of all, an excellent overall showing from both quarterbacks.
It’s not time yet to call for a national title for this season. After all, the Scarlett Knights are not very good. Just a year ago, Rutgers won a total of one game. Presently, the Knights are on the same trajectory.
That is to say, this victory doesn’t mean what some might think it means. It was a good win. It was a game the team was expected to win and win big.
But the manner in which they won was impressive. Getting the goose egg on defense and putting 52 points on offense was necessary for the healing of this fanbase. It was also necessary to quash the call for a new head coach. Harbaugh and company did exactly what they needed to do to stave off the attacks and rebuild trust with the fans.
“Thought it was an excellent job by coaches, by players,” Harbaugh said, postgame. “Josh Gattis, all the offensive coaches, all the offensive players. The precision they had. They improved and it showed. Put together a really good game plan, and the players knew it.”
The execution of the game plan was tremendous, but can this team carry forward the momentum? We will see next week against unbeaten Iowa. Until then, here are the grades for the Wolverines post-Rutgers victorious rebound.
As always, the grades are based on an A-F scale.
