Michigan Football: 3 key takeaways from Wolverines win over Rutgers
By Nick Popio
Michigan football did what they were presumed to do in a thumping of an overmatched Rutgers bunch.
From the outset, the Wolverines functioned competently in every aspect of the game. Following last week’s debacle, an improvement like that is a welcome sight to all Michigan football fanatics. The maize and blue pick up their initial Big Ten win of the season with a steady dosage of different playmakers on both sides of the ball.
Shea Patterson came out slinging and continued the onslaught throughout. He finished with four combined touchdowns while passing for nearly 300 yards. It was a sorely needed bounceback effort that Patterson has been clamoring for. He shared the rock with an abundance of talent as Ronnie Bell lead the way again.
In the running part, Christian Turner and Hassan Haskins carried the load for the day. Haskins had a nice breakout that he had been working towards so far this year. Even Joe Milton got involved by adding a fourth and goal bootleg scamper for a trip to the house in the early stages of the final quarter. The offense could seemingly do no wrong besides one giveaway that eventually amounted to a turnover on downs for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers penetrated the Michigan side of the field after trailing early, but the defense stood tall as it did all game long. It preserved the shutout while coming up with several stops on fourth and short that the Scarlet Knights went for. Don Brown’s unit came up with constant pressure and executed just about as flawlessly as many had hoped for.
