Michigan football didn’t play anywhere near its best Saturday but the Wolverines found a way to win in overtime. Here’s what we learned.

When Army went to Oklahoma and nearly beat the Sooners last season, Michigan football fans realized that the Wolverines might get a game from the Black Knights. But I don’t think anyone expected what we saw on Saturday.

Especially after the Wolvineres had some issues with Middle Tennessee State last night, the message all week was how things were going to be sharper.

It was the second game with Josh Gattis calling the plays for Michigan football, as well as everyone’s second game of the season. Things were supposed to be crisper, smoother and more efficient.

But they weren’t. Three fumbles nearly doomed the Wolverines. A missed field goal and a turnover on downs in the fourth quarter didn’t help either. If Army had made a 49-yarder to end the game, Michigan football would have suffered its worst home loss since App State.

Thankfully, Lavert Hill made that interception and the defense came up with a forced fumble to close out the win. It wasn’t pretty but it was much better than a loss, which would have doomed the Wolverines playoff hopes and sent the season into a tailspin.

A wake-up call is maybe just what this team needs heading into the bye week and a road game at Wisconsin. But some lessons have to be learned and here are the five things we learned from the overtime.
