Michigan Football: Latest on A.J. Henning and other key recruits
Michigan football hosted over 20 recruits in Ann Arbor this weekend and while there are still a lot of unknowns, it was clearly a positive for UM.
On the last big recruiting weekend of June, Michigan football had a number of key targets visiting Ann Arbor and while there haven’t been any new commitments yet, by all accounts, things have gone well for the Wolverines.
The hope was always to get some key players to commit this weekend, guys such as A.J. Henning. However, these things take time and as far as Henning goes, according to Steve Lorenz of The Michigan Insider ($), the Wolverines have made a positive impression on Saturday.
Henning, the top player in the state of Illinois and the No. 80 player overall in 2020, is the Wolverines top target at wideout. He’s someone they have been after hard since Josh Gattis came on board and he was hosted by Mike Sainristil, the incoming freshman that opened eyes this spring. Who better to tell Henning how the system can showcase his skills?
Lorenz also indicated that while he wasn’t quite to the point of putting a crystal ball in Michigan’s category, he was moving closer in that direction. Penn State, which he visited last week, is in the mix along with Notre Dame and Georgia. Notre Dame holds 43 percent of his crystal ball predictions. Michigan is sitting and 29 percent and 29 percent are undecided.
Outside of Henning, maybe the most important recruit in attendance was Jordan Morant, the top safety in 2020 according to the 247 sports rankings. Morant is from New Jersey and is ranked 160th in the 247 composite rankings.

He also visited Penn State last week and it seems like the Nittany Lions were gaining ground. However, Morant is still being projected to the Wolverines and Lorenz also noted ($) that his visit seemed to be going very well.
Lorenz put in a crystal ball for Morant earlier and he said he will be sticking by that selection. He also put in Michigan predictions for a number of other recruits visiting such as outside linebacker Kalel Mullings, Aaron Lewis and Mitchell Melton. UM is also trending in the right direction with four-star offensive lineman Reece Atteberry of Colorado.
Mullings, a 6-foot-1 220-pound linebacker is probably the most notable because it was a projection Lorenz flipped from Stanford. Mullings is from Boston and ranks 148th nationally, as well as ninth among outside linebackers. UM’s ties to the Northeast seem to be helping.
Lewis is another intriguing guy. West Virginia has long felt like the favorite but Michigan is stepping up to challenge the Mountaineers. The 6-foot-5 defensive end from New Jersey is being recruited by Anthony Campanile and Chris Partridge.
He was among the visitors Saturday and it obviously went well. Partridge has done really well in New Jersey, so that’s another good sign for Michigan football. Melton is a linebacker that ranks 660th in nationally and is from Maryland. Like Lewis, he is a three-star recruit.
Certainly, it will be worth keeping an eye on social media in the next few days. On top of Henning, other key guys that visited Michigan were Theo Johnson, Blake Corum, William Mohan, Eamonn Dennis and Andrew Raym, among others. It will be interesting to see how those visits went.
Stay tuned, the weekend is not over and it wouldn’t be the least bit surprising to see some recruiting news break shortly.
