Michigan football hosted four-star safety Malcolm Greene over the weekend and here’s why he is another option to consider for the 2020 class.

When it comes to the safety position, Michigan football has been in on a couple of key names for 2020, Makari Paige and Jordan Morant for a long time.

Paige, who is from West Bloomfield, Michigan, is one of the Wolverines top in-state targets as he ranks as a top-5 player within the state according to the 247 composite rankings.

Morant, who calls New Jersey home, is the 10th-ranked safety according to the 247 composite rankings, as well as the top safety in the class according to 247sports own rankings for 2020.

67 percent of Morant’s crystal ball predictions have him going to Michigan football and most of those projections have been trending in the Wolverines favor. However, after visiting Penn State last weekend and showing some enthusiasm for the Nittany Lions, that thought could be shifting.

Of course, in recruiting, it doesn’t take long for the rumor mill to starting churning, especially on Twitter.

While it’s way too early to worry too much about Paige or Morant, especially considering Morant isn’t slated to commit until January 4, 2020, another potential option in the class at safety is four-star Malcolm Greene, who was in Ann Arbor this past weekend.

Greene doesn’t rank quite as highly as Paige and Morant, yet the product from Highland Springs, Virginia, still ranks 297th overall according to 247 sports and No. 24 among safeties.

The visit was an unofficial one but according to Steve Lorenz of the Michigan Insider ($), it was part of a recent effort by the Wolverines staff to build a better relationship with Greene. According to Lorenz, that effort appears to have worked.

Lorenz said he had no idea what Greene’s timetable was for a commitment, but it doesn’t seem like Greene is making up his mind soon, which should give UM a chance to make an even bigger push with him.

It’s hard to say if the pursuit of Greene has anything to do with the recruitment of Paige or Morant but Michigan has to be aware of the push Penn State is making with Paige, who like Morant, had 67 percent of his predictions sending him to the Wolverines.

Obviously, Michigan will probably sign more than one safety, yet three seems like a big number. Morant has felt like a much stronger Michigan lean than Paige, who I always felt would wind up elsewhere. It feels like Penn State could be that place, which could open things up for a guy like Greene if he can be convinced to join the Maize and Blue.
