Michigan Football: Ranking the Top 10 players on the current roster
Donovan Peoples-Jones
Donovan Peoples-Jones was the top of one of the best wide receiver classes in Michigan football’s history and yet his stats just haven’t materialized.
DPJ caught 22 passes for 277 yards his freshman year and 47 for 612 yards his sophomore year. Those numbers should be blown out of the water with the upgraded, huddle-less RPO offense.

The WR room has been filled with injuries over the past couple of years and this off-season has been no different. DPJ finally fell into the broken category; however, Gattis provided some relief about DPJ’s situation.
“He finally feels healthy, he finally feels back,” Gattis told the Detroit Free Press. “He’s been working out, now it’s about him learning the offense. Obviously, he missed a significant amount of time, he’s a very smart kid, he can pick up on things, but now it’s about getting the physical reps. It’s about taking the detail and translating it over into success on the field.”
Brandon Knapp from Wolverines Wire conducted some fantastic data analysis in his article Why Josh Gattis can make Michigan’s 2019 wide receiver corps elite. I highly suggest reading the article if you want to intelligently argue why the Wolverines made the right decision by hiring the play-caller who doesn’t have play-calling experience.
