Michigan football has been working hard at getting some wide receiver commits in the 2020 class and here is the latest about what’s going on with that pursuit.
Things can change quickly when it comes to recruiting and that’s something that Michigan football fans have found out lately.
One prime example is 2020 wide receiver A.J. Henning. One day, it looks like Henning is a Michigan lean and then, after a visit to Georgia, it’s nothing but silence when it comes to the Wolverines.
That doesn’t mean that Michigan football is out of it with Henning, its top target left at wide receiver, but it appears ground must be made up if he is to wind up with the Maize and Blue.
And there is more than one thing that makes me believe that. Henning’s reaction to his Georgia visit and the rumblings that followed are one thing, but another is the Wolverines pursuit of Eamonn Dennis, a three-star athlete from Massachusetts.
According to an article from 247 sports, Michigan views Dennis as an all-purpose back/slot receiver. He’s also 5-foot-10, around 175 pounds and runs a 4.53, all of which sounds like Henning, except Henning is a top-100 recruit and Dennis currently ranks No. 474 overall.
Henning is supposed to visit Michigan again at some point and Dennis has a visit scheduled for June 14 and Thursday, Brian Dohn, an expert in northeast recruiting, placed a crystal ball for UM on Dennis ($) and suggested the No. 34 athlete in the country could commit on the spot.
While getting a commitment is never a bad thing, it makes you wonder if Dennis is some sort of insurance policy in case Henning has become a lost cause. Certainly, you can have similar players in a recruiting class, just look at how Michigan brought in Giles Jackson and Mike Sainristil in 2019.
Cameron Martinez, an in-state prospect from Muskegon could be another option, however, 80 percent of his crystal ball projections are with Ohio State. Maliq Carr, another wideout Michigan football was targeting recently, also is now projected to Purdue, instead of the Wolverines.
In the words of Vince Lombardi, what the hell is going on?
When Josh Gattis came onboard, it seemed like the Wolverines had tons of momentum with wide receivers and now that appears to be falling by the wayside. Some new targets are emerging such as Dennis and Hawaii four-star Roman Wilson, who visited over the weekend and gave Michigan glowing reviews. He also placed the Wolverines among his top five via the Michigan Insider ($).
At the very least, when it comes to Michigan and wide receivers in the 2020 class, there are a lot of moving parts. Unless things change, it seems like Henning, Carr and Martinez are headed elsewhere.
That leaves Dennis and Wilson as the two most likely to commit right now. That’s my read on things at this moment, but as we all know, in recruiting, things can change in an instant.
