New Michigan basketball head coach Juwan Howard will be formally introduced on Thursday at a press conference. Here is the time and how to watch.

While Juwan Howard is starting his duties as head coach of the Michigan basketball team already this week, he won’t be formally introduced as the Wolverines coach officially until Thursday.

We have known the date of the press conference but on Tuesday, the University released more details about when Howard will be formally introduced as Michigan basketball coach and according to UM, it will happen Thursday at 11:50 AM EST.

Michigan basketball fans can also stream the press conference live if they wish at the official website of Michigan athletics: mgoblue.com.

This will be exciting for a few reasons but the most important is that it will be Howard’s reintroduction to Michigan.

Obviously, we have read some of the things he has said in statements and interviews, but it’s different than hearing from the man himself and that’s what Wolverines fans will get to do that Thursday.

Certainly, there is hope among fans that we will have a better idea of who will be on Howard’s staff by Thursday but it’s hard to know if that will happen. There have been few rumors leaking out about who Howard might consider outside of the current Michigan staff that includes Luke Yaklich, Saddi Washington, and DeAndre Haynes.

The only suggestions about possible candidates came from the Miami Heat Beat, an entity that covers the Heat for Five Reasons Sports. They suggested candidates such as Mike Miller, Tim Hardaway, Ryan Miller and Rich Fernando.

One of the most interesting candidates listed there to me is Mike Miller and by Mike Miller, I don’t know if they are talking about the Mike Miller that played in the NBA.

It seems to me the other Mike Miller, the former Division I head coach and current head coach in the G-League of the Westchester Knicks, seems like a perfect fit for what Howard needs.

Miller has spent 13 seasons as a head coach in college basketball and took Texas State to the NCAA tournament back in 1997. He also won two regular-season titles in the Southland Conference before also being the head coach at Eastern Illinois.

In the tweet, it was unclear which Mike Miller was meant, although because the Mike Miller that currently coaches at Memphis played for the Heat, it makes sense it could be him too. I reached out for clarification but haven’t heard back.

If it is the player Mike Miller, that wouldn’t be a bad move either, because he has proven some recruiting chops with Penny Hardaway at Memphis, which has the No. 1 class for 2019 right now.

Outside of recruiting though, Miller (the NBA player) doesn’t seem like a great fit. The other Miller, the one with 20-some years of college experience who was also named G-League coach of the year in 2017-18, sounds exactly like what Howard needs.

Miller knows how to develop talent and with over a decade of head coaching experience, he will have plenty of knowledge and could help the transition.

Hopefully, when Thursday rolls around we will know more but for now, it’s just exciting to know that Howard has officially gotten to work.
