The hiring of the new basketball coach has drowned out any mention of the Michigan football team. Here’s what you missed.

Jim Harbaugh and staff have been a busy bunch even though no one knows about it because all the attention has been concentrated on the basketball team. Just this week two High School athletes have committed to Michigan football and another committed a week before them.

Don’t get me wrong, having Juwan Howard is exciting but football is right around the corner and it deserves just as much attention.

As we know, the season didn’t end on a high note, although the draft was a complete success for the Wolverines. Michigan lost Devin Bush and Rashan Gary in the first round of the draft and you might be asking yourself, why is that good news? It’s great news because future recruits know Michigan is continuing to put out first round talent.

Only two football players were taken in the 2018 draft and neither in the first or second round. Really bad sign for an 8-5 team and really bad for recruiting. Harbaugh turned it around this year and the 2019 recruiting class is winding down with Michigan leading the Big Ten.

The only bad news surrounding the maize and blue is the number of players who have entered the Transfer Portal. It’s not surprising considering the lenient rules in place when deciding who gains immediate eligibility but there are always those outliers that can make the system look bad.

Just yesterday, lineman Ron Johnson added his name to the portal making it a total of 13 players from the Wolverines roster. None of them were projected starters although most were valuable members of the scout team like Ron who was winning Scout Defensive Player of the Week year after year.

As the old guard moves on, the fresh faces begin making their way to the podium letting the college football world know where they intend to continue their football playing career and that’s just what this next guy did last night.
