Michigan Basketball: 5 takeaways on the hiring of Juwan Howard
Michigan can win next season
Some Michigan basketball fans have decided to declare that next season is already a wasted season because of a new head coach.
Obviously, there are questions after losing Jordan Poole, Charles Matthews and Ignas Brazdeikis to the NBA draft, as well as top commit Jalen Wilson. But even without those guys, the cupboard is far from bare.
Zavier Simpson is one of the best point guards in the country. He will need to score more but he’s an elite defender and having him running the show will be huge. Also returning guys like Teske and Livers is critical. That’s basically three starters back.
Johns, Castleton, DeJulius, Adrien Nunez and Eli Brooks will need to step into larger roles next season and Howard will have to work to develop those guys. He also needs to shore up Cole Bajema and try to fill out the roster.
But even if no other players are added, this team has enough to make the NCAA tournament and be one of the top 4-5 teams in the Big Ten. And to me, that’s the floor, not the ceiling.
