Michigan Football: 5 questions facing the Wolverines after spring ball
How will Harbaugh handle the quarterbacks?
When it comes to quarterback, a certain segment of the fanbase wants to try and create a controversy between Patterson and McCaffrey. That might not have been helped by McCaffrey who looked electrifying running the ball in the spring game.
However, Patterson’s overall game is more polished and complete. He was made for Gattis system and if he has all his weapons, this offense could be the best in the Big Ten.
Yet, with the way McCaffrey ran the ball and the way he throws it, you wonder if there could be a Tim-Tebow like package installed for him. McCaffrey could certainly make some things happen with his legs, but his play-action game would be deadly with his ability to throw.
Last season, he played well against Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Penn State before injuring his solider and it might be worth finding ways to use his talents, which are different from Patterson’s, while also getting him more game experience for the future.
That is sort of assuming that McCaffrey wins the backup job over Milton, which is far from a guarantee. Ultimately, I see McCaffrey being the backup, but only by a slim margin and I think Milton will get as much mop-up duty as possible as each young signal caller prepares for what should be a ruthless competition to be the starting quarterback in 2020.
