Michigan Football: 10 Wolverines who improved their stock this spring
Jalen Mayfield is in the hunt at RT
For the most part, Michigan football is all settled along the offensive line with four of the five starters returning from last season. Even Andrew Stueber, who started the last few games of the regular season and the Peach Bowl is back.
Yet, the right tackle job isn’t locked up yet and that’s because of the growth of redshirt freshman Jalen Mayfield, who seems to be neck-and-neck in the battle for the starting job.
Stueber got the call first on Saturday and has been going with the No. 1 group for most of the spring but Mayfield has filled out this spring and with his size, he appears to be an ideal tackle.
Offensive tackle hasn’t been the biggest strength during Jim Harbaugh’s tenure outside of last season when Jon Runyan Jr. earned All-Big Ten honors. But Mayfield has the look of being a really good player on the edge and he’s a name to watch this fall. He’s one of the few guys with a chance to break into the starting lineup on offense.
