Gentry improved his draft stock

Make no mistake, Friday was a big day for Gentry who was timed at 4.9 in the 40 during the NFL combine. For a guy that left Michigan football a year early and was hoping to be a second or third-round pick, that was a disastrous time.

With a bunch of NFL teams watching, Gentry put together a much better performance Friday, posting a 4.7 in the 40. Gentry said that one team told him he was clocked at a 4.66 according to the Detroit Free Press which is a solid gain.

Running a solid time was key and even though it wasn’t blazing, the 6-foot-8 tight end ran well enough that he should get drafted sometime on day three of the draft.

Even though he ran better, that slower time is still going to linger with some teams. What hurts Gentry too is that he really wasn’t that productive at Michigan after making the switch from quarterback to tight end.

In the last two seasons, he caught 49 passes for 817 yards and four touchdowns, with 32 receptions coming last season. He’s still likely to be viewed as a project and he probably needed to run in the 4.5’s to get drafted during the first two days. Now, it feels like day three.
