Michigan Football: 5 Wolverines that need to step up this spring
Dylan McCaffrey will have a fight at backup QB
One of the best things about this spring for Michigan football is that the Wolverines really don’t have a question at quarterback, at least not when it comes to who will be starting.

Some Michigan fans don’t want to believe it, but Shea Patterson is going to be the Wolverines starter next season and truth be told, they are lucky to have him. Certainly, he needs to adjust to Gattis as the play caller but I don’t see how any of the other quarterbacks could beat him out.
However, when it comes to being his backup, all bets are off. Dylan McCaffrey looked to have a stranglehold on the gig last season but that was before he injured his shoulder against Penn State.
After that, Harbaugh never really said if the backup was Brandon Peters or Joe Milton. Peters is a redshirt junior this season and he also needs a strong spring if he wants to be the backup and at least earn a chance to play in garbage time next season. But either way, he isn’t the future.
Milton, McCaffrey and also freshman Cade McNamara are. All three will be in spring practice and McCaffrey who will be practicing at full go for the first time since his injury needs to show he is the same guy he was before he got hurt.
It’s not like the 2020 starting quarterback is going to be decided this spring, but with such a strong depth, quite possibly the strongest Harbaugh has had at Michigan, McCaffrey will want to maintain his standing and that means performing this spring.
